“Drama is not just a tool. It’s the perfect way to help the students dig deep inside themselves and explore their identities, set up their goals in life and follow their dreams.“

Drama clubs

The Hands Up Project trained teachers to set up and run drama clubs in schools all over Palestine. These spaces enable students to develop their creativity and discover their talents. They are now very well established as a tool for extra curricular English language development, and as a focal point for Hands Up Project remote sessions with volunteers around the world.

Children as authors

It was during a joint UNRWA-British Council conference in 2016 that Nick Bilbrough came up with the idea for the Hands Up Project annual playwriting competition. Fast forward to 2021 and almost 500 plays written by Palestinian children have been submitted for the competition. 90 of them have been published in our collections - Welcome to Earth, Popcorn and Toothbrush.

Remote theatre

How do you perform a play when you have no theatre to perform it in and no audience to watch it? Remote theatre provides the answer to both those questions. Short plays created by Palestinian children have been performed live and remotely at schools, conferences, literature festivals, and public events on an international stage.
